How to Get Rid Of Overthinking
I have tried to keep it simple for you to understand how to get to rid of overthinking for yourself or for your loved ones. I have divided it in the 5 easy steps to overcome overthinking.
So, let’s understand what those 5 key steps are.
1. What is Overthinking?
Access of anything is always harmful and is always dangerous. We have been taught the same way since our childhood. And this is so true if we understand it deeply.
Excess of confidence can turn into “Overconfidence” and it can ruin our presentation, our own image and can ruin one’s life.
Excess of dose to any medicine can turn into an overdose which can lead to death for someone.
Similarly, excess to thinking leads to the term which we know as “Overthinking”.
So, overthinking is just a loop of thoughts.
It’s a big trap that people became a part of in this loop.
2. Problems due to Overthinking?
Thera are so many problems that arises due to these loop of thoughts and overthinking.
Some of the major issues are –
- We are not able to focus on one thing.
- We feel stressed day and night.
- It affects our productivity at work.
- And because of all these, we are not able to manage our relationships.
- We feel unhappy all the time and just want to stay alone.
And there are so many problems which a person goes through when he’s going through this phase of Overthinking.
3. Reasons – What leads to Overthinking?
There could be hundreds of reason why a person falls in this trap of overthinking. But, I think there are majorly five reason why a person falls into this trap.
People have regret – Due to this social media world, digital media, internet; people are the victims of misunderstanding because they are not spending time with each other and they are more active on social media. And if something wrongs happens by them or to them. They keep feeling this emotion regret inside them. Remember – “Regret is the biggest poison”.
Preparation – Since our childhood, we are taught to plan for the best case scenarios but no one told us to be also prepared for the worst case scenarios as well. This is the reason thousands of people became victims of this trap in this pandemic 2020.
Perfect Life – Most people wants a perfect life for them. They should be having everything that other person is having. And the biggest trap is the social media; people show something on social media but the reality is way far different than what they show of them on social media. And most of the people want that same lifestyle which these so called ‘Influencers’ are living on social media.
Not living in present – When we overthink, we are either living in our past or we are living or thinking about the future. Most of the time we are more concerned about “What If”. What if I would have taken that decision in the past, What if I am fired from the job? What if this, What if that? Instead of this, we should focus on living in present.
Chasing perfection – I am among this group of people or should I say I used to be among this group of people. These people don’t take enough action when required. They always wait for the perfect moment to start something that they are thinking about. Even to learn or speak English – people say we’ll speak/learn when the time will come. Don’t know what they are waiting for.
See, now you can’t change what has happened with you in the past and the future is not in your control. No one knows what exactly will happen to you tomorrow.
4. Solution to overcome Overthinking.
The best way to get rid of overthinking that worked for me in the past and that even work today are as follow –
Acceptance – This is one of the key reasons why there are so many conflicts that are happening in every single relationship these days. And it’s not just about your relationship with others but more importantly your relationship with your own self. If you have done something wrong then please accept it and move ahead. Don’t just hold this within inside you.
Flow Chart – Creating a flow chart will help you in giving you more clarity in your thought and you’ll be able to plan much better for yourself and also you’ll be able to remember things for a longer period of time. This flow chart technique is also known as mind-mapping. You can do it on paper or mobile devices, laptop,s or tablets. You can do it anywhere. There are plenty of tools available for doing this.
Meditation – Meditation helps you calm your mind which has created the whole mess in your entire life. You can look for a guided meditation on youtube which will guide you step by step as to how to do the meditation properly.
Reboot the System – I just relate this overthinking with the rebooting process in mobile devices because most of the time when something goes wrong with my phone; I just hit that reboot button. And guess what, in the majority of the cases that issue got solved. Similarly, when you are going through this hard time of thinking again and again. Just take a break and do things that are just the opposite of what you were/are thinking about.
Forgive People – Forgiveness is the greatest give you can give to anyone. And you should start this by giving this to yourself first. You have been so hard on yourself, I have been so hard on myself at times. So, just take a moment and forgive yourself for all the things that you have done in the past and take responsibility in the present. And later you start with forgiving people who have done something wrong with you.
